Sky Layer
Category:Geography
A vertical network of rooftops, skywalks and elevated rails — the stage for high-mobility combat.
The Sky Layer in Nova City’s three-dimensional structure, a vertical space network composed of rooftop platforms, sky bridges, elevated light rails, floating advertising screens and tower cranes. The Sky Layer is the most futuristic area of Nova City, and also the primary combat stage for characters with high mobility. The Captain’s tentacle swinging, parkour and high-speed movement are maximized in the Sky Layer, while large Chaos Manifestations often target high-rise buildings as attack objectives.
Space Composition
The Sky Layer is not a continuous plane, but a space interwoven by multiple vertical levels:
Rooftop Platforms
High-rise buildings in Nova City generally have accessible rooftop platforms, some of which have been converted into rooftop gardens, helicopter pads or communication base stations. The rooftop platforms of skyscrapers in the Central Business District are relatively close to each other, and skilled parkour practitioners or Espers with high mobility can jump and shuttle between buildings.
Sky Bridges
Enclosed or semi-enclosed corridors connecting adjacent buildings, mainly distributed in the Central Business District and Downtown Shopping District. Sky bridges allow people to move between buildings without touching the ground, and normal passage is possible even on rainy days. Some bridges have shops and cafes, becoming small aerial commercial streets.
Elevated Light Rails
Most sections of Nova City’s light rail system use elevated forms, with track pillars 10 to 20 meters high, traversing various areas of the city. The elevated light rail is not only a means of transportation, but also an important “road” in the Sky Layer—in emergencies, characters with high mobility can run or swing on the tracks.
Floating Advertising Screens
Large holographic projections and LED advertising screens float between high-rise buildings, and are an important part of Nova City’s night scenery. The support structures of these screens are complex, providing diverse paths for parkour and combat. During Chaos incidents, advertising screens are often damaged, and falling fragments pose a threat to pedestrians on the ground.
Tower Cranes and Construction Platforms
Nova City continuously undergoes urban renewal, and tower cranes and construction platforms at building sites become temporary structures in the Sky Layer. These structures are unstable, but also provide additional movement paths and combat cover for high-mobility characters.
Environmental Characteristics
The Sky Layer’s environment differs significantly from the Surface Layer:
- Broad Views: Overlooking the entire city, the best position to observe the spread of Chaos incidents
- Strong Winds: Wind force at high altitudes is far greater than on the ground, affecting the accuracy of long-range attacks and the movement of light characters
- Lack of Cover: Except for building structures, the Sky Layer has almost no natural cover, and combat relies more on mobility
- Fall Risk: Combat in the Sky Layer requires constant attention to footing, and one mistake can lead to severe fall damage
- Communication Advantage: Signal reception in the Sky Layer is good, making it an ideal position for communication and monitoring
Chaos Situation
The Chaos concentration in the Sky Layer is relatively low, and rifts rarely appear directly at high altitudes. But large Chaos Manifestations often target high-rise buildings as attack objectives, climbing from the ground or Underground Layer to high altitudes to wreak havoc. In addition, some flying-type Chaos Manifestations活动 in the Sky Layer, threatening the safety of light rails and sky bridges.
Story Connections
- Volume 1 Prologue: The Captain activates Chaos tentacle abilities, swinging and shuttling between high-rise buildings, using tentacles to grab street signs and car wreckage as temporary weapons
- The Sky Layer is the Captain’s primary combat stage, where tentacle swinging ability is maximized
- Volume 1 Chapter 5: When the Black Metal Crew launches a large-scale attack, combat spans multiple areas of the city, including the Sky Layer
- Thermo often sets up thermal Chaos cannons at high positions to provide long-range fire suppression
- The top floors of super-tall buildings such as Nova Tower are commanding heights for monitoring and command
